Too Little of The Sunshine Vitamin = More Colds and Flu

All Latest News

Higher Vitamin D levels are associated with lower risk of respiratory infections, according to the largest study ever conducted on this topic. According to the article in U.S. News and World Report, "Vitamin D each and every day is what will keep the doctor away when it comes to the common cold or the flu."

A team from Harvard Medical School and Children's Hospital Boston studied vitamin D levels, nutritional habits, and respiratory infection rates of nearly 19,000 American men and women. Lower Vitamin D levels were found to be associated with increased risk of respiratory infection, especially in people with pre-existing respiratory disease, like asthma or emphysema.

The article, Too Little Vitamin D May Mean More Colds and Flu, also mentions a review of studies conducted by researchers at The Mid-America Heart Institute in December which suggests that those with Vitamin D deficiency - estimated to be half all Americans and 1 in 3 children - might face an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

The list of benefits of adequate Vitamin D levels continues to grow.
